M ountain Journey , as its title suggests, is a series in which the artist documents personal experiences of climbing mountains through painting.
The circular compositions symbolize a camera lens, a telescope, or the eyes of a mountaineer gazing upon the landscape, capturing fleeting scenes encountered during the journey and preserved within memory. In its visual approach, the series combines the highly decorative metal leaf techniques characteristic of the Japanese Rinpatradition with the restrained aesthetic of traditional literati painting, which is based primarily on tones of black, gray, and white.
Through this fusion, the works seek a balance between ornamentation and spirituality.
Through the use of empty space, layered mineral pigments, and the subtle reflective qualities of metal leaf, the series not only depicts the external scenery of the mountains, but also conveys the tranquility, sacredness, and sublimity experienced during the act of climbing itself.
